A horse riding vacation means 6 days of adventure in the wonderful region of Transylvania, the most famous place in Romania. Quiet rides through the breezy forests and free canters on the wide hills.
Trail Ride Schedule
Day 1 Pick-up at the Cluj-Napoca airport. Transfer by minibus through Gherla-Dej-Beclean to Sieu-Sfantu(100 km) to the ranch „Caii Lupilor” („The Wolves Horses”), a farm situated near the village of Sieu-Sfantu (Saint Sieu), surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains. Arrival and accommodation at the farm, in two cosy cottages. After the accommodation, a traditional Transylvanian dinner is served with the traditional beverage of the region: TZUICA. During the meal, the hosts will discuss about the program for the next days (the hosts Ioana and Simi speak fluently english and french).
Day 2 After breakfast, we distribute the horses and their equipment. The road leads first day on the Transylvanian hills, with an altitude of 600 m, in the surroundings of the Wolves Horses Farm. The route is through woods and pastures where cows, sheep and other animals of the village spend their summer in freedom, everything is very wild and authentic. Lunch is served on top of a hill, to have av ast and relaxing view. Follows the arrival at the Hubertus guesthouse, located on the edge of a large lake, where we’ll be eating specific fish.
Day 3 In the third day we go to the Black Hill, where we find a mountain cottage that belonged to former President Ceausescu. The area is known as having the largest concentration of brown bears in Europe. Black Hill cottage, built in the 80’s, was placed in isolation, with a difficult access road, so it keeps the tranquility of nature. The three runways for helicopters are still functional. Guests will enjoy a landscape like emerged from a fairytale. The building is built on a hill, it’s hindered and alleys are paved.
Day 4 During this day we have to cross a mountainous area with an extremely difficult climb, both for horses and the riders. Stone paths, dense forests, where, hopefully, we’ll find traces of wild animals: bears, wolves, deer, foxes. We go to the top of the mountain called by locals Three Borders. Here we find Poiana Stegea cottage, located in a wild and secluded place where we spend the night. The bedrooms are heated with wood stoves and electricity is generated by a power group because there is no electricity in the area.
Day 5 After a spectacular morning of Three Borders mountaintop, we head towards the forest cottage in Poiana Colbu. The itinerary takes us on Gipsy peak (1596m) and the natural lake Taul Zanelor peaceful oasis where nature is at ease. Water and forest wilderness is best found here. Taul’s fascinating legends about fairies are known by all locals. End of the day takes us to the hunting lodge of Poiana Colbu.
Day 6 Next we cross the Carpathians by Terhi and Prislop meadows, where we can see the Strunior (1885) mountaintops. Moving towards Dornisoara village, where earlier, was held a stone quarry work. Accommodation is in a cottage located at the foot of the mountain.
Day 7 From here begins the road to Calimani National Park, a protected area and extremely wild. From now on, we no longer find settlements. Follows the climb to 12 Apostles Geological Reservation. These and the peak Lucaciu, situated nearby, preserve the testimony of magical-mythical events descended from the old Dacian culture and shaped over time in the form of Romanian Orthodox Faith. This route coincides with the”free Dacians” road known to have release of Roman Dacia.
We spend the last night of the trip at the warm guesthouse in the village of Gura Haitii, where we are expected with traditional Romanian food.

**Horses are equipped with western saddles and are from various breeds: Lipizzaner, Shagya-Arabian, Arabian, English thoroughbred.
***Horse riders must master the three gaits: walk, trot and canter, and be equipped with a helmet, a torch and possibly a raincoat.
